Transportation Hub
Urban Design Considerations
Many travelers, which have to stay at the transportation hub for a brief period of time, would like to find out about Ottawa or at least familiarize themselves with the surrounding area. The new design allows them to stay within the station and at the same time be aware of the surrounding cityscape. The new addition uses the roof of the existing train station as an extension to the green area adjacent to the building, observation deck as well as the means to save energy from heating and cooling the building in Ottawa climate (characterized by cold winters and hot and humid summers). Also the transportation hub is linked by the yellow pedestrian/bicycle passage to the adjacent green area and bike trail, allowing the travelers to come out from the station directly to the park.
In future the transportation hub might need extension. The new design establishes the connection to the adjacent poorly developed industrial and commercial area, presetting the direction for future expansion of the station. The urban strategy established by the new transportation hub is to ensure seamless integration into the prospective urban redevelopment.
At night, the new transportation hub building lit from inside becomes immediately recognizable to travelers signifying the arrival to Ottawa.
