Professor Brian Lonsway

Location

Ottawa Train Station,
200 Tremblay Road
Ottawa,Ontario

Objectives

  • To research, respond to and highlight the unique aspects of designing a transportation hub that serves the selected site and community.
  • To build knowledge about materials, products and assembly (primarily plastics and plastic composites) contributing to sustainable design and innovation in energy efficiency.
  • To create a transportation hub that accommodates needs for all users and constituents associated with a transportation facility.
  • To encourage designers to employ sustainable design and universal design principles for development of both building and site.

Proposal

Existing building was built in 1966. The rigidity and monumental symmetry of the original design do not allow for any additions to be built. THE NEW DESIGN maintains similar architectural language, yet it challenges the symmetry of the original station in a way, that allowes for the station to grow and to contribute to future redevelopment of the urban fabric surrounding the station.

The new addition consists of three above ground semitransparent corridors, linked together and a separate pedestrian underground passage connecting the two parts of the site that where cut off by the railroad.

Trunsportation Hub

THE ARTERY carries through the pulse of the city and contains within a pause between the transition - the waiting.
