Montreal iconographer Alexandre Sobolev visited Christ the Saviour on Sunday, January 20 to deliver the first four of twelve festal icons he is writing for the top tier of our iconostas.  The new icons depict the great feasts of the Meeting of the Lord (above left, held by Dn. Michael), the Baptism of the Lord, or Theophany (above centre, held by Fr. Maxym), and the Entry into Jerusalem (above right, held by Alexandre). Missing from the photo is the fourth icon, which depicts the Annunciation.

Alexandre, who had previously completed two magnificent frescoes of the Crucifixion and Resurrection for our church, hopes to finish the remaining eight icons for the top tier in time for the canonical visitation of His Eminence, Metropolitan NICHOLAS in June, at which time they will be consecrated.  He has also been commissioned to write an icon of the Communion of the Holy Apostles, which will occupy the space above the Royal Doors.

Alexandre holds a degree in Fine Arts and first learned to write icons at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery in Russia.  He now maintains a busy studio/workshop in Montreal, where he instructs a large number of students.
